Energy independence on dairy farms: photovoltaics and storage systems reduce costs sustainably

How a Lithuanian farmer implemented an efficient PV storage solution with KOSTAL and ZYC – from planning to amortisation

"Electricity is one of the biggest cost factors on our farm," says Lithuanian farmer Tony, describing a problem that many agricultural businesses are all too familiar with. From milking systems to lighting, cooling and heating, the energy requirements of a modern livestock farm are consistently high. Added to this are rising electricity costs and the desire to operate in a more sustainable and independent manner. The search for an efficient and future-proof solution ultimately led the dairy farmer to integrate a powerful photovoltaic system with battery storage – installed and planned by PV installation company UAB Artlitas.

From need to solution

In addition to what he describes as "ever-rising electricity prices," the farmer was also motivated by a European subsidy programme for sustainable investments. This was complemented by a recommendation from a colleague who had already had positive experiences with Artlitas. For the new customer, it was clear: he wanted an affordable, low-maintenance self-supply system that would deliver quick results. Initially, it was to be a simple PV system, but a conversation with Artlitas quickly revealed that the real potential lay in combining solar power with battery storage – tailored precisely to the electricity demand, which is particularly high during the day, parallel to solar production.

Innovative technology tailored to specific needs

Together, they developed a complete solution: two ZYC Energy SIMPO HV battery towers, each with nine powerful modules, and two modern Kostal PLENTICORE G3 hybrid inverters resulted in a coherent system with 40 kW PV power and 57.6 kWh storage capacity. Technical challenges during implementation were also overcome thanks to close cooperation with Kostal and ZYC. "We were able to react quickly and integrate the system cleanly. The collaboration went smoothly and the result is impressive both technically and visually," summarises Artlitas.

The project was also of great importance to the Artlitas team: "We are specialist partners of KOSTAL and ZYC in Lithuania and see this innovative hybrid solution as an important reference project for future customers. It shows that we can offer strong, sustainable solutions even for complex tasks."

Quality and trust right from the start

The farmer himself confirms: "Thanks to the recommendation, I had no doubts whatsoever. The installation was quick – I was convinced from the outset that I had made the right choice." What was particularly fascinating: "When the system produced electricity for the first time and I could see on the display how the batteries were being charged, I knew that the investment would be worthwhile."

Energy under control and costs reduced

With the new system, the farm now covers its entire energy needs, from milking technology to barn heating, day and night. The analysis tools used by the farmer confirm every day how efficiently the solution works. "I'm thrilled with how much energy is generated and stored – the system is really impressive," he enthuses, proudly reporting that neighbours and friends are also impressed by the performance and the impressive battery setup.

The payback calculation is extremely positive: "The system will pay for itself in three to four years. I'm already saving the entire annual electricity costs." The system is even designed for future growth: additional solar modules and an extra battery tower are in the planning stage to generate even more of the farm's own electricity.

A recommendation for the future

The farmer advises other businesses: "Don't hesitate, switch to solar and storage now. Artlitas provided professional, clear and reliable support throughout the process." The experts at Artlitas also advise future installers: "Technical challenges are opportunities. It is important to have a precise understanding of the practical requirements and to consistently implement innovative solutions."
